I Called, I Texted, I Screamed — And Someone Answered

Suicidal ideation has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, so I know how much it matters to hear a voice that doesn’t rush or judge — one that stays until you can breathe again.

I also know what it feels like to reach out and feel like you’re screaming into the void, crushed by silence that makes you feel worthless and unbearably alone.

That’s why I want to start with the lines that do answer. Friends and family have told me how The Trevor Project met them with patience and affirmation when they felt most at risk. Trans Lifeline is answered by other trans people, so callers don’t have to explain themselves just to be understood. BlackLine centers Black, Brown, Native, and LGBTQIA2+ people. StrongHearts Native Helpline supports Indigenous survivors of violence. And Crisis Text Line has shown up quickly and consistently for many in my community, staying with people throughout their crises when they needed someone the most.

I’ve seen the difference these lines make. I share them because I’ve seen how they’ve helped people I love steady themselves and feel less alone.

Because here’s the truth: when I texted 988, I never got a reply. That silence was soul-crushing.

When I called the suicide hotline, I was transferred, forced to relive my trauma, then hung up on mid-story because they had somebody else to talk to. Later came a generic email with “resources” for a county I didn’t live in. It devastated me.

What kept me here wasn’t 988 or that hotline. It was Seattle Crisis Connections, the clinic that actually answered. It was my community refusing to let me go. Most of all, it was the people who love me.
